New Event: US vs Canada
This year the US and CAN National Teams will be doing several demonstration races including a first ever 4x race.
New event: Rowak Classic
This year’s regatta will host the 2nd annual Rowak Classic, which will feature the US and CAN rowing teams as well as the World Champion Czech K4 against each other in a race off to see who is faster — a four person kayak (K4) or a four person rowing shell (4-). The race off will constitute a 500M sprint where we expect to see the fast starting Czech K4 get out to an early lead with the US and CAN 4- closing on them at the finish.
New Events: Para-rowing events
First time ever the Crew Classic is hosting Adaptive rowing events that will feature disabled veterans from around the country. Paralympic Rowing is on the menu for the Olympics in 2016 in Rio and many of these athletes will be fighting for spots on the team in 18 months.
Event Features
From its modest beginnings in 1973, the Crew Classic has matured into a legendary and premier spring regatta, one of the largest regattas held primarily for eight-oared rowing shells. Today, it is a two-day, nationally acclaimed regatta for juniors, collegiate, masters and Olympic-level competitors, set in the picturesque waters, sandy shores and green lawns of Mission Bay Park in San Diego, California. More than 25,000 spectators watch the races both from the shoreline, as well as on the popular Jumbotron on-site. San Diegans can be proud of the strong influence the regatta has had on the sport.
Against the backdrop of the San Diego skyline, spectators at the Crew Classic can enjoy a bevy of dining options from multiple food trucks, alumni and corporate tents, and the Sierra Nevada Beer Garden. The massive Jumbotron provides spectators with the perfect view of the start of the races.
Race Course
With the explosive power of eight athletes, races start near the Sea World towers and pass the Ingraham Street Bridge, head North along Mission Bay for 2000 meters, and finish at Crown Point Shores — all while being cheered on by fans, families, coaches and college pep bands.
Schedule
Racing is tentatively scheduled to begin at ~7:30 a.m. each day. The racing action continues until about 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and about 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. The Jessop-Whittier Cup heats begin early in the morning on Saturday, March 28th, followed by the Copley Cup heats. The Jessop-Whittier Cup final is set for Sunday morning, March 29th, followed by the Copley Cup final.
